Matching Visual Animation to Sound
I first became aware of the importance of sound with visual animation after attending a lecture on visual communication in Denmark. At this point, my Danish was elementary at best which helped me to grasp the concept the lecturer was describing when introducing the above video. The trailer is for a Danish film but for those who are unfamiliar with the language, the visuals are the main source of education on trailer content. This prompted me to consider the implications of matching sound to animation. It is easy to assume that for cartoons, language transfer is easy. This is probably true, but to me, this video highlights the true difficulties of accomplishing sound to visual transfer. When listening and not watching, it is hard to know what is happening. This is similar to our assignment in many ways. Though animators try and articulate language through visuals, our project captured more of a feeling associated with sound. Reconsidering the lecture I participated in, this project helped me gain a better idea of how this transfer process occurs as it is more of communicating conceptually than what could be described as "verbatim."
