Frozen II: Poster Art

We have been talking for quite a bit on how to achieve depth during our in-progress critiques. We talked about how overlapping objects can give a sense of foreground and background, how size influences our perception, etc.

When we gain more freedom with the tools of Illustrator, another idea to achieve depth would be to change the opacity. Take a look at the poster art for Frozen II. Notice how the trees that recede to the back are a bit more transparent than the trees closer to us. In addition to the different tree widths, this change in opacity gives us the impression that some trees are farther than others, creating depth.

I like this poster for its composition as well. Much of the content is in the middle third of the design, where the title and the characters are. Thus, the trees on either side of the characters serve to frame the important content of the poster. Furthermore, the long trees accentuate the vertical focus of the design, making Anna and Elsa look taller. Certainly, they look older than they did in the first movie.

  1. Nice use of atmospheric perspective to depict the illusion of depth in space...
